Community Living Players present ‘We Need A Little Christmas’ at The Playhouse

As winter chills begin to set in we are reminded that Christmas is just around the corner. This fall some very dedicated Morrisburg Community Living participants are working hard with Playhouse Theatre School Director Mary Ellen Viau at preparing a half-hour Christmas show that will be presented at Upper Canada Playhouse on Monday, December 17th at 1:00 pm. The group has been meeting at The Playhouse every Thursday morning to rehearse their lines and practice songs. Artistic Director Donnie Bowes has dropped into many of their rehearsals and invites everyone to take time out to enjoy this show and be swept away with Christmas spirit. ‘Mary Ellen’s work throughout the year with our Morrisburg Community Living clients is a wonderful thing’, commented Bowes. ‘It’s one of the most significant ways that The Playhouse connects with our community’. We Need A Little Christmas features a pageant with carols as well as a celebration of some of our most beloved Christmas traditions. Costumes and comedy, storytelling and lively songs are featured in this not to be missed presentation. Everyone is welcome and admission is free, so mark the date on your holiday calendars.

The Playhouse and Community Living Team Up

The Playhouse and Dundas County Community Living have initiated a joint project with the theatre’s Mary Ellen Viau conducting Thursday drama classes with Community Living’s clients. The program has continued during the Spring and will also meet throughout the summer and fall with a special Christmas show planned for December 17.

Playhouse Business Manager Honoured

Upper Canada Playhouse recently honoured Business Manager Roseann Kelly for her 25 years of service to the theatre company. Kelly is the longest-serving employee of The Playhouse and the valuable work she has performed for a quarter century was recognized at the November 28th opening night of the theatre’s Christmas show, Have Yourself A Swinging Little Country Christmas.

Playhouse-Business-Manager-HonouredBoard Secretary Joanne Notman made the presentation of an engraved watch in front of a packed house that also expressed their enthusiastic congratulations for the work she has done for the theatre. Thousands of audience members and staff have had the opportunity to know and work with Roseann over the years. Her skilled, friendly and helpful dedication to Upper Canada Playhouse has earned her the praise, thanks and recognition of this anniversary presentation.

This shot was taken hastily. You can figure out why! We’re getting ready to add a new Rehearsal Hall to our theatre! It will enhance and complete our venue and make it easier for us to rehearse all of our shows onsite.

Watch for shots and info on the progress this Winter!

Artistic Director Donnie Bowes shows just where our Rehearsal Hall will be. He’s also taking advantage of the opportunity to tell you it will be air conditioned!

Ontario Summer Theatre Discovers The Playhouse & Morrisburg Experience! Check out the terrific blog…

Ontario Summer Theatre is visiting all of the professional summer theatre companies in the province to highlight the theatres themselves and the communities in which they operate. Blogger Anne Heathcote recently visited Morrisburg and paid Upper Canada Playhouse a visit. Take a look at what she discovered!

The Playhouse recently underwent $800,000 worth of upgrades and renovations, partially to appease new fire regulations but also to expand office space and reorganize the backstage area. Indeed, as Donnie shows us around, I marvel at how well laid out the entire place is, given that spaces at either end of the building were add-ons; it feels homogeneous. Most impressive is the fact that this was achieved without government funding. The theatre operates successfully via ticket sales (43,000 last summer season!) and a healthy sponsorship program. This year, 71 establishments have signed up to support them. Donnie tells me how gratifying it is to see so many businesses thrive when the company is in season and also “to see an arts organization acknowledged for not only enhancing a community’s quality of life but also having a significant impact on the local economy.”

Another Great Auction – Thanks to You!

2013-Auction-DSC_5069Our 2013 Christmas Gift Auction was held on November 16th. Thanks to one and all for making this fundraiser such a huge success! Hats off to the local businesses, organizations and individuals who donated items for our Silent and Live Auctions, those guests who attended the event and the Auction Committee who worked tirelessly to make it all possible. Everyone enjoyed a social hour, a fabulous meal and the fun of finding that special gift for that special person–or just for themselves! Auction revenues are directed towards improvements to our venue and our production facilities to continue to make our The Playhouse a comfortable place to enjoy the highest standard of live professional theatre.

Playhouse Annual Christmas Gift Auction – A Guaranteed Good Time!

We’ve earned the reputation for having one of our community’s first holiday events of the season. And we’re doing it again this year! Start the Holiday Season off with a bang and a ‘bid’ by joining us for our 2013 Annual Christmas Gift Auction on Saturday, November 16th at The Morrisburg Meeting Centre. The evening begins with a 5PM social hour with free wine & cheese followed by a scrumptious dinner at 6:15PM and the Live Auction at 8PM. The Silent Auction continues throughout the evening. Tickets are $55.

The products and services featured in the Live and Silent Auctions are generously donated by local businesses, organizations and individuals. They include a wide array of practical and whimsical items with something for everyone. They are also unique ideas for that special someone on your gift list– or just for yourself!

The fun of the Auction is not only bidding on these wonderful gift items. A popular part of this annual event is the opportunity for those attending to socialize, share a wonderful meal, support professional live theatre and enjoy one of the community’s first Yuletide events of the Season!

auction-presentationLast year’s Auction raised over $16,000 which was directed towards the purchase of new seats. This year’s event promises to be even bigger and better. Funds will be used to renovate and upgrade the production and public areas of the building to allow us to carry on our tradition of producing a high standard of production and also to continue to offer our patrons a comfortable and safe venue for enjoying live professional theatre.

To purchase your Auctions tickets, or to showcase your product or service by donating an item for our Silent or Live Auction, call The Playhouse at 613-543-3713.
